image

The Council of Europe, in close cooperation with the Ministry of Justice of Azerbaijan, is organising a launching meeting for the implementation of the project on “Support for Prison Reform in Azerbaijan 2008-2009”. This project aims to address the needs of the Penitentiary Service of Azerbaijan to carry out reforms within the prison system in line with European standards. The project, which will run for two years, is funded by the Government of Norway.

The Project is now in its inception phase. This meeting is organised to present and discuss the work to be carried out under the project and agree on the Work Plan.

The meeting will be held on 3 September in Baku, from 09:30 until 13:30 at Grand Hotel Europe Kura room. All media representatives are invited to the opening of the event.

The project will pursue three main objectives:

- to provide support for the Prison Training Centre to develop its capacity and enhance the professional skills of the prison staff and thereby protect prisoners’ human rights;

- to improve the provision of health care in prison through illness prevention and health promotion, and

- to promote the use of alternative sanctions and measures and support the establishment of a Probation Service in Azerbaijan.
